Factors to Consider when choosing the right training?

April 6, 2024

This is from an article we have previously had published in Professional beauty magazine but We have added some additional information at the end to guide you on choosing the correct course for you.

  • Research the accreditations held by the college. Ensure the college is accredited by major examining bodies. These Colleges are subject to standards and regulations by these boards and so it lends itself to a higher standard.

  • Choose a college offering as many qualifications as possible for the time you spend training.. The more qualifications you can get the better when you seek employment. The Beauty business is changing so rapidly and the bar is constantly being raised so it’s important your as employable as you can be. Always be certain that basic qualifications needed for progression are included in your course.

  • Choose a College that offers additional qualifications. Some of the most popular salon treatments at present do not form part of the basic syllabi for accreditations by major exam boards yet they are sought after by employers. Basic qualifications are no longer enough for many employers with many now looking for employees qualified in shellac/gel polish application, spray tan, lash lift training etc.
  • Ensure your qualifications will be insurable. It seems obvious but not always so. Many Colleges offer their own qualifications and sometimes these can be difficult to gain insurance with, so always ask are these certificates accredited by an insurance company or if required check with insurance providers.
  • Check class sizes within the college. Smaller classes are a major benefit when studying such practically orientated modules. Smaller class groups lead to higher standards. You get more personal attention and more correction of your techniques.

  • Research the college. Colleges which are well respected and have a good reputation among employers constantly receive communication seeking their graduates, therefore your employment opportunities are greater.

  • Check if the College provides Commercial experience. This is massively important in the beauty business. Graduates are often unprepared for dealing with “real clients” or performing salon style treatments. This is a benefit when seeking employment, to add to your CV that you have experience of dealing with clients in a commercial environment.
  • Content in College courses can differ greatly between colleges so be specific when researching. If there are certain topics or modules that interest you always check the hours dedicated to these areas/courses. Discuss your expectations with the college to ensure the focus area of the course suits your needs. The professionals can always give you the information you require and point you in the right direction.

Some additional help when researching your course:

  • Online courses can vary massively. There is a tremendous difference in online courses available. Many are completely unregulated offering no recognised qualification and little support if needed. Its not about price for online courses it has to be considered what kind of support is available. If companies believe in their online courses they will be confident to offer any further support you may need.
  • Decide what type of a therapist you may like to be. We are in an age of specialising and so we have Aesthetic therapists, skincare therapists, Nail technicians, Lash and Brow technicians, Spa therapists, Make up Artist, Sports Therapists, Holistic Therapists etc so its important to consider what type of therapist you may like to be. It may be better to gain an all round qualification first but with a plan as to where you may like to advance to.
  • The course you choose is only the start . Your course lays the foundation for your career but never stop training! In this business if you don’t continue to train you will get left behind.
  • Check out real life experiences at the College. Research the college, speak to graduates and check out the reviews.
